The Tribe

Ben HAKALITZ (Drummer/Kuakumba Flutes/Guitar and Vocals) with a musical career spanning over 20 years, is from Bougainville, Papua New Guinea (PNG). He has toured worldwide with international artists including, Yothu Yindi and Peter Gabriel. Ben lives in Cairns and was awarded the Australia Centenary Medal for services to the Australian Community through
Music. He worked on the soundtrack to Australian Director/Producer, Bill Bennett’s film: “In The Savage Land” (won an AFI Award, 1998). He also performed at the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sydney and in the opening acts for Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue (2003) and Carlos Santana’s Australian Tour (2004). Ben has also worked with Sanguma, DrumDrum,
Toni Nation, Tamabaran Culture, Seaman Dan, Not Drowning, Waving and Telek. Ben co-wrote the music for the PNG’s National Theatre Company stage musical: “Sana Sana,” which was performed at the South Pacific Festival of Arts in Cook Islands.

Pius WASI (Alto & Soprano saxophone, Kuakumba flute/Vocals) has performed for the past 20 years as a professional musician/ Choreographer and dancer. He graduated from the Arts School at the University of PNG and was Music and Artistic Director for Tambaran Culture band and the Kaiwosi Dance Troupe. Pius played with Sanguma and Drumdrum and was
Co-Founder/Artistic Director of PNG’s DUADUA Theatre. Pius wrote the impressive track; “T’mme Yakinso,” which is based on his home Province of Sepik in PNG. He recently single-handedly managed a “Singsing” Festival in Lae, Morobe Province, PNG.

Richard MOGU (Bass guitar/Vocals) is from Amazon Bay, Central Province in PNG. He is currently based in Port Moresby as a Music Teacher at KoroBoro International Primary School and has played with Barike, Monta (Japanese Artist), Potts, Siloam Gospel, Sanguma, Drumdrum and P2UIF. He is trained as an Audio Engineer/Producer since 1997. Richard wrote and sings several songs in the debut album, including Selo Maleo and Unari.

Airileke INGRAM (Percussions/Congos, Garamut, Warup and assorted bilas) has a Bachelor in Arts (Percussion Major) and was awarded the Churchill Fellowship for Music in 1998. He worked in PNG and studied in Hawaii and Cook Islands. Airi was Musical Director for Darwin group, DrumDrum and toured worldwide with since 1993. With Wild Water, Airi, had supported Maxi Priest’s Australian tour. DrumDrum released two albums and Airi has several film/TV credits including, “Marimba Dances” by Ross Edwards and “Fai’a – dance production by Sunameke. Airi has collaborated extensively with international artists including, Yothu Yindi, Culture Connect, Sama Ballet (Sri Lanka), Telek, DJ Dexter, Not Waving Drowning, Tom E. Lewis and Bob Brossman (USA).
